Dick from Clontarf first saw us when he was considering solar power. He was wanting to minimise his overheads in his retirement. John and his family ordered a 3 kW Hyundai Aurora grid connected solar power system in May 2011 for their lovely home in Geebung. With a growing family John was concerned about his energy costs and wanted to reduce them by fitting the largest solar power system he could afford on his roof.

When the family received their first power bill they were delighted with the result, not only was the power bill reduced, the energy retailer owed them money.

Solar Power Rebate (STCs & Solar Credits)

STCs rebate and Solar Credits for Grid Connected Solar Power Systems

When installing a solar power system you may be eligible to create STCs (Small-scale Technology Certificates). As long as you’re installing approved equipment with an accredited installer following all the appropriate standards then you should qualify.

The amount of the rebate is proportionate to the size of your system.

Also, there is a multiplier that gives additional support known as Solar Credits for the first 1.5 kilowatts (kW) of capacity installed for systems connected to the grid (different for off-grid systems). Solar Credits work by multiplying the number of STCs that these systems would generally be eligible to create. For systems installed from 1 July 2011 to 30 June 2012, the multiplier is three and reduces by one each financial year until the standard rate of STC creation (a multiplier of one) applies for systems installed from 1 July 2013.

To work out how many STCs your solar power system would be eligible for, obtain the output of the system in kilowatts, then use the small generation unit calculator on the Government’s REC Registry by clicking here.

All a bit puzzling? The Australian Government Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency has plenty of information here to get you really bamboozled.
